Quick Tip - Using QWIKOPTS

by Chuck Davis

For Release 4.1 of MVS/Quick-Ref, new recommendations were issued in the installation considerations section of the documentation. One change related to the use of QUIKOPTS to define the data base name; using QUIKOPTS is now the recommended method.

If you recall, previous releases suggested naming the MVS/Quick-Ref data base as a comment on the QUIKREFA panel. When the QW command was invoked, the panel name was found and the data set was dynamically allocated. This method is still valid and works correctly; however, the QUIKOPTS method of defining the panel name has the advantages of flexibility and efficiency.

QUIKOPTS is a user-tailored table that contains various information that MVS/Quick-Ref uses when it is invoked. This information includes the following:

    * the name of the main data base
    * the name of the user data base(s)
    * the name of the override parameter data set
    * the default SYSOUT characteristics used for all output created by the QPRINT command
    * the default route code used for WTO messages issued
    * the default name of the sort utility used at your site
    * for our European clients, default character translations
    * the default prefix character used for your JES2 commands and messages

To tailor QUIKOPTS, simply change the information as is appropriate for your installation. Then, use the JCL supplied in member QUIKOPTJ to assemble the data into a load module. Having this information in a load module is more efficient and can reduce response time.

Since you should always examine the QUIKOPTS during installation and since you will need to change QUIKOPTS if the defaults are inappropriate or if your installation requires more than one user data base, a predent move is to always use QUIKOPTS for the naming of your data bases.
