Quick Tip - Cursor-Driven Invocation of MVS/Quick-Ref from within Quick-Ref

by Robert Norris

Many users of MVS/Quick-Ref utilize the cursor-driven invocation feature of MVS/Quick-Ref. This is the facility that allows you to place the cursor under any item appearing on certain display screens and then press an appropriately-defined PF key in order to invoke MVS/Quick-Ref and to request an immediate display of the reference information for the item indicated by the placement of the cursor.

Some users, however, may not be aware of the fact that, if cursor-driven invocation of MVS/Quick-Ref is installed for any product in a given shop, then it is automatically available from within MVS/Quick-Ref itself. You still have to make the PF key assignment for MVS/Quick-Ref that is required for all products for which cursor-driven invocation is to be used. However, once this is done, you can place the cursor under any item shown on an MVS/Quick-Ref reference information display and then press the appropriate PF key in order to recursively invoke MVS/Quick-Ref and to request an immediate display of the reference information for the newly- indicated item. When you are through viewing the reference information for this new item, you can use the ISPF RETURN command (or the PF key equated to RETURN) to return to the previous MVS/Quick-Ref display.

As an example, suppose you look up the MVS/Quick-Ref information on COBOL subscripts. In the description of COBOL subscripts, a reference is made to the OCCURS clause. If you have forgotten exactly how the OCCURS clause is formatted, you can place the cursor under the word OCCURS and press the appropriate PF key. This will immediately bring up the MVS/Quick-Ref information on the COBOL OCCURS clause. Once you are through refreshing your memory of the OCCURS clause, you can use the ISPF RETURN command (or Pf key) to return to the previous display of the MVS/Quick- Ref information on COBOL subscripts.
